The National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC) and the Government Advisory Council (GAC), yesterday established a partnership to tackle how best to achieve each institution’s respective goals.

The two institutions yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), outlining modalities of how they will jointly promote unity and reconciliation, social cohesion, good governance in the public, civic and corporate domains.

GAC is an institution charged with promoting good governance in various areas of the country through research, advisory services, policy debates, and capacity building.

According to Fatuma Ndangiza, NURC’s Executive Secretary, the 4-year partnership agreement will mobilize resources, oversee the implementation and ensure successful execution of activities by both institutions.

"Apart from conducting research on political, corporate and civic governance, this cooperation will also enhance capacities and skills of both institutions’ staff and their partners,” Ndangiza said.

A recent joint Governance assessment report indicates that good governance is an important strategy for poverty alleviation and to boost sustainable development.

Dr. Anastase Shyaka, GAC’s Executive Secretary underscored the need to agree on activities to be jointly undertaken and sign protocols for each activity.

"We will assess and analyze together perceptions of citizens on the performance of the home-grown mechanism of justice and our relationship may be amended by mutual consent through exchange of correspondences,” Shyaka said.
