• To sell 9.7 ha to developers

Kigali City Council (KCC) will tomorrow start the sale of the first plots of land, as part of the development plan of the newly created Central Business District (CBD). The improved and expanded CDB is provided for in the recently unveiled Kigali City Master Plan.

Located in what used to be called lower Kiyovu, phase 1 development of the new CBD marks the beginning of the implementation of one of the projects laid out in the city’s master plan.

According to Bruno Rangira, the KCC Communications Director, the city in partnership with the Nyarugenge District and Social Security Fund of Rwanda (SSFR) have developed basic infrastructure in the first phase of the CBD.

"We have put the basic infrastructure like paving roads, clearing the plots and all of them are already in place as we speak,” Rangira said by phone yesterday.

According KCC, development of the Central Business District will enhance doing business within the city and subsequently improve the investment climate.

NSSF supported the city in the expropriation of the former slum area and the development of Batsinda low cost housing estate to where the former residents were relocated.

"The total area to be sold off is 9.7 hectares where 26 plots are to be developed and tender documents will be availed to prospective investors who will pick them from the SSFR offices after the launch,” Rangira narrated.

He added that companies like the pension body and Military Medical Insurance (MMI) have already started to construct their business buildings at the site.

At the event KCC is expected to relinquish the site development to Nyarugenge District and SSFR.
