Rwanda has received a timely boost before beginning the final phase of African Zone qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in March, leaping up one place on the latest Fifa/Coca-Cola world ranking released on Wednesday.

The Amavubi Stars climbed to 85th on the global ladder, 16 places behind fellow Cecafa member, Uganda who climbed two places to 69th.

Cameroon is the highly placed African team on the global raking on 16th position and top in Africa.

Rwanda’s opponents in the 2010 World/Africa cup qualifiers, Egypt have slumped 17 places to 31st, Algeria is placed on 64th position and Zambia is 92nd, seven places behind Rwanda.

Maintaining the top position in the world, European champions Spain lead by exactly 300 points over Germany. After dropping out of the top ten in December 2008, Portugal have regained their place (10th, up 2) at the expense of Turkey (11th, down 1), while Russia have climbed one place (8th, up 1).

All this movement has resulted in a change in the overall composition of the top 50, with 27 teams now from UEFA, eight from CAF, seven from CONMEBOL, four from CONCACAF and four from the AFC.
