BJKC 2024: Algeria promoted to Africa Group III, Rwanda finish in fifth place

Algeria emerged victorious in the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group IV, clinching the title with a commanding 3-0 win over Togo in the promotional playoff match held at IPRC-Kigali Ecology Tennis Club on Saturday, June 15.

The Northern African country hence secured promotion back to Africa Group III. They had dropped to Africa Group IV, down from Group II which is way higher and more competitive, after the they failed to show up for the competition in 2023.

In the first singles match, Algeria’s Maria Badache defeated Togolese Ayawayi Dotse 6-0, 6-0 before her teammate Ines Ibbou also triumphed over Ami Diwinga Dougah with 6-0, 6-1 to cement Algeria’s promotion to Africa Group III.

They capped off their dominant campaign with yet another win in the doubles when Badache paired with Mebarki to beat Dotse and Dougah 6-2, 6-3.

Elsewhere, hosts Rwanda secured fifth place after defeating Mozambique 3-0 in the 5th/6th playoff match.

Lia Kaishiki led the charge by defeating Ilga Joao 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles match to finish the tournament unbeaten with five singles wins in as many games.

Gisele Umumararungu ensured Rwanda&039;s fifth-place finish by beating Khumalo 6-2, 6-2 in the second singles match.

Sonia Tuyishime then teamed up with Olive Tuyisenge to win the doubles match against Joao and Khumalo 6-2, 6-4.

The 2024 Billie Jean King Cup featured 10 countries, including Angola, Cameroon, Congo, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Algeria, Tanzania, and the host nation Rwanda.
