President Paul Kagame on Saturday, May 16 visited flooded areas that experienced heavy rains in Nyabihu District in the Western Province.
The rains destroyed several activities, including roads, bridges, plantations, houses, water distribution networks, and claimed lives.
"Earlier today, President Kagame visited areas of Nyabihu District affected by heavy rains, including Giciye Bridge which is being rebuilt to enable pedestrians from the area to access Shyira Hospital,” the Office of the President said in a tweet.
Shyira Hospital is located in Shyira Sector in Nyabihu, approximately 27 km from Musanze in the Western Province. It’s the largest referral hospital in the area.
The hospital was unveiled by President Kagame in 2017 after undergoing a massive facelift, allowing it to have more capacity to cater for thousands of patients.
Antoinette Mukandayisenga, the mayor of Nyabihu told The New Times that torrential rains last week destroyed bridges and roads that communities use to access Shyira hospital.
"This made it difficult for people to access healthcare services. However, activities have been underway to fix the roads, bridges, and other activities that were destroyed,” she said.
According to the mayor, at least one of the three major bridges that were destroyed on Thursday last week has been temporarily fixed with plans to upgrade it.
Mukandayisenga noted that 1,413 houses were destroyed in her district while 20 people lost their lives in the unusual rains that hit Nyabihu.
