The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) will this weekend unveil a major sponsor ahead of the Senior Challenge Cup slated for December 8 to 22 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Cecafa Secretary General, Nicholas Musonye told Times Sport on phone that the regional body will unveil the major and potential sponsor of this year’s regional event over the weekend.
"We still have a few things with the potential sponsors but before the end of this week, everything is set to be in order,” Musonye said.
Musonye also disclosed that the Ethiopian tycoon, Sheikh Al Amoudi, who has been sponsoring the annual event for the past three years, has shown keen interest to extend the support.
"Sheikh Al Amoudi confirmed to me recently that he was willing to continue supporting the competition,”Musonye said.
Musonye has also revealed that new sponsor from the UK has confirmed his support for this year’s regional tournament. He declined to reveal his name and opted to reveal him once the deal has been sealed later this week.
Initially, Gateway Television, Supersport and Castle Lager had all shown interest in sponsoring the 80-year-old tournament.
However, all companies have not reached an agreement with the regional body but before the end of this weekend, a deal will be struck with one of the above mentioned companies.
Participating countries
Meanwhile, Musonye said 11 countries, including Rwanda, have confirmed participation in the event. Others are Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia and Zanzibar.
Cecafa presidency
Musonye said the federation would elect a new chairman during its Annual General Meeting before the official start of the tournament in Dar es Salaam.
"Forms were dispatched to all federations affiliated to Cecafa so that they can nominate their preferred candidate for the post and they are to post them back to the body headquarters mid this month (October 15),” Musonye said.
Musonye is assured of another four-year term given that his post was through appointment.
