Aime Bosenibamwe, the Mayor of Burera district has been appointed the new governor of Northern Province, replacing Boniface Rucagu, one of the longest serving public servants in the country.

A former Executive Secretary of the former Kibungo Province, in the Eastern Province, Bosenibamwe was appointed to his new position by a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame, on Wednesday. He had served as the Mayor since 2004.

He was instrumental in undertaking several projects  in Burera which culminated in turning the district from being last in performance contracts to the second best countrywide.

Talking to The New Times, he welcomed his new assignment and said that agricultural growth and environmental  protection would be his priority as a new governor.

He said that the biggest challenge lies in the physical hilly landscape of the area which will require terracing in order to transform the largely unproductive mountainous areas into food producing zones.

Bosenibamwe, 41, a holder of  a degree in Agriculture Engineering from Kisangani University, has had a colourful career in public service.

He worked in the Ministry of Agriculture where he held various positions before he became the Executive Secretary of former kibungo province and later on he was named the mayor of burera in 2004.

‘From experience as a senior public servant in Burera, I look forward to bringing infrastructural changes in the province’, Bosenibamwe remarked upon hearing news of his appointment.

Boniface Rucagu the former  governor for the last five years is now the  head of  Itorero Ryigihugu.
