HUYE — Preparations are in high gear for the eleventh graduation ceremony at the National University of Rwanda (NUR),where 1,440 students expected to be awarded various degrees in different disciplines.

The graduation ceremony slated for March 27 will see the award of Master’s degrees to 92 students mainly from science related fields. Only 22 are female. 

Thirty-six students, the highest number in the Master’s degree category, are from the irrigation and drainage programme.

The university now offers over ten Master’s programmes mainly in the science fields. According to the university publicist, Sam Mandela Muzinga, this has contributed greatly to bridge the gap in the country’s skilled human resource needs.

"The introduction of many different post graduate programmes at the university means that government no longer has to incur high costs of sending students abroad for programmes that can be offered locally,” said Muzinga, adding, "the highly skilled human resource gap can now be filled by locally trained professionals.”

The university offers Master’s programmes in medicine, water resources and environmental management, agro-forestry and soil Management, public health, epidemiology, clinical psychology and therapeutics, business law, economics, ICT and law.

In the Bachelors degree category, a total of 1,348 students, 27 percent female, will graduate.

The Faculty of Economics and Management has the biggest number of graduands standing at 251, followed by the Faculty of Social, Political and Administrative Sciences with 241 students expected to graduate.
