The quest for places on the national team for this year’s World Cross Country Championship in Amman, Jordan gets underway this morning at Kigali golf club.

The trials event is expected to attract the leading Cross Country athletes drawn from over 22 athletics club countrywide with an aim of selecting the best.

The local athletics body, RAF  has confirmed that the final team will be selected from today’s championship. The selected athletes will represent Rwanda at the world event in Jordan.

It has all been announced that Rwanda will be represented by a team of 12 runners, five senior boys, two senior and five junior girls.

The essence to field more women junior players than the seniors is to find capable women athletes who will take part at the Singapore Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

Rwanda didn’t participate at last year’s world cross country in Edinburgh, Scotland after a failing to secure travel visas on time while the country’s lone hope Dieudonne Disi didn’t finish the championship.

The peak of the battle in today’s trials event is expected to pit the pre-event favourite Sylvain Rukundo against his local rivals Gervais Hakizimana, Felix Ntirenganya, Jean Baptista Simuceka, Cyriaque Ndayikengurikiye and Godfrey Rutayisire.
