KARONGI – Four men who were recently arrested in Karongi district while selling caps bearing the old National flag have been freed on bail.

The release was announced on Wednesday, by the acting District Police Commander, Inspector of Police Justin Ntaganda in an interview at his office.

J.D Nkurunziza, Claude Ndimubandi, Nepo Habarugira and Jean Pierre Ayabagabo, all residents of Rwankuba Sector were caught red handed while selling the merchandise in Rwankuba market in Karongi.

Ntaganda explained that the quartet were released on non cash bail but would be reporting to police twice a week.

‘Yes they were released on bail as investigations continue but we shall keep gathering information from them,’ he said.

He added that their release came after preliminary investigations established that the caps were directly imported from China by an unidentified importer.

‘The information we have is that these caps were imported from China and we are waiting to establish those who are behind the importation,’ said Ntaganda.

The quartet reportedly had 300 caps, and they argued that they had bought them from another whole seller in Rubavu District whom they identified as Grace Akimpaye.

The Mayor, Bernard Kayumba, had earlier stressed that the sale of such merchandise is  illegal.
