President Paul Kagame was quite right when he said on Tuesday, during his monthly press conference at Urugwiro Village, that the recent developments implicating government officials in corruption scandals, should not be interpreted as government having lost the battle against the vice.

Over the last couple of months, we have seen several government officials in public office put behind bars for corruption and abuse of office.

We add. It is saddening even more when leaders who are supposed to set moral, standards are the very people who violet the laws of the land.

With the massive arrests, some involving Permanent Secretaries, some people might think that corruption is on the increase, becoming uncontrollable in the government offices.

The reverse is true, this is an indication of a national leadership that refuses to sweep the vice under the carpet.
The arrests are part of the evidence of the zero tolerance for corruption and other related vices in Rwanda.

Whereas in other countries, corrupt officials buy their way out of jail and are left to go scot-free; in Rwanda, it is a different matter all together; you mess up with public finances and the price is high.

Like the President suggested, you cannot fight against corruption, alongside those who practice it.

The challenge for the media therefore is to take up the President’s call to be the watchdogs against corruption. Report on it.
