Senator George Mupenzi resigned from his legislative position following an alcoholic incident – involving drink-driving – it has emerged.

On June 6, the President of the Senate "received the resignation letter of Mupenzi George from his position as a Senator for personal reasons,” reads a short statement issued by the Parliament of Rwanda, on June 7.

According to reliable sources, Mupenzi was involved in drunkenness on Wednesday, June 5.

Mupenzi, who was born on September 18, 1956, according to his profile on the Parliament website, was sworn in as a Senator on October 17, 2019.

He holds a bachelor's degree in law.

Before joining Senate, Mupenzi held different functions including being the Coordinator of Centre IWACU (Centre of Research and Training in Cooperatives) — a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of social and economic justice through worker collectives and cooperative training and research programmes.

He was also once a Personal Assistant of the Minister of Public Service and Labour; and Technical Advisor of the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour.

Meanwhile, this is not the first case of a Member of Parliament (MP) steps down in connection to drunkenness.

In 2022, two MPs resigned in similar circumstances. Gamariel Mbonimana stepped down from his legislative seat in Parliament, on November 14 that year, after his drink-driving record was exposed. Ernest Kamanzi resigned on December 28, as reports indicated that he was caught drink-driving.

But both cited personal reasons while tendering in their resignations to Parliament
