The event is still a few months away, but it has already sent tongues wagging, as Kigali prepares to hold the first ever dog show in June –a kind of event that anyone would expect to attract a lot of comments, given the traditional beliefs attached to dogs.

The 1st edition of the Kigali Dog Show is set for June 27 at Ineza Garden and it will feature dog accessories, dog food, dog trainers, vets, pet rescue organisations and puppy vendors as well as a barbecue for dog lovers.

DJ Miller is the talk

However, the funniest part that led to pandemonium on social media is the inclusion of DJ Miller, one of the leading DJs in the country, who is expected to play music at the event. The dreadlocked spin master has become the recipient of all jokes.

Though dogs are treasured in the Rwandan tradition, they are still looked down upon and not well treated in most cases, hence the astonishment when many had there is going to be a dog show in Kigali.

In fact, the story made it to Rwanda Television headlines as many joked about DJ Miller’s involvement. The music man behind the ‘Stamina’ hit who is also known for his love for dogs took to social media to explain to curious Rwandans that dog shows are normal elsewhere and so they should be in Rwanda.

"Dog Shows are events which bring together dog owners and dog lovers. Many activities happen at the event. DJ Miller will be playing music for those who will attend the event, not the dogs,” DJ Miller said, responding to a social media user who wondered if he will be playing for dogs.

Other Twitter users such as Bobby Rutarindwa wonder how DJs who play for dogs are called.

The show is organised by the Kicukiro-based Sibemba Kennels, an academy which specialises in training dogs Sibemba Kennels Academy says it provides both basic and specialized training for dogs with different traits, including obedience, problem-solving, protection, detection etc.

They also provide other dog care services. DJ Miller thanked Sibemba Kennels for planning the first dog show and breaking the barriers.

Eric Gahamanyi from Sibemba Kennels said the show was organised to bring together dog lovers to celebrate ‘man’s best friend’ and share experiences while having fun.

Dog shows are common events in developing countries where different categories of shows are organised. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in the UK is one of the oldest and most prestigious conformation dog shows in the world.

Other dog shows include, dog agility shows and the world's ugliest dog contest, which showcases ugly and weird dogs. However, it is the first time a dog show will be held in Rwanda as the dog culture continues to gain popularity.
