All parents want their children to grow up to be good people and responsible citizens. This is why children are taught to tie their shoes, read and write and solve math problems.

Though doing thissounds boring, children are guided to develop a good character. A good character prepares us to become good and responsible citizens.

We become patriots. Being a patriot simply means that you love your country. This comes to small things like protecting your environment and helping others.

However, you cannot be a patriot if you do not know the colours of your country’s national flag and at least the first chorus of the national anthem. If you don’t, you should start thinking again about loving your country.

I guess many of you get stuck when singing the national anthem. But at least you should know the colours and meaning of the national flag. If you don’t know, I will help you know all the symbols on the national flag.

The Rwandan national flag has three horizontal colours. These are sky blue on the top, followed by yellow in the middle and green at the bottom.

The colour blue stands for peace and happiness. The colour green represents prosperity and hope. The yellow band stands for economic progression.

The flag also has a golden sun with 24 rays near the fly end of the blue band, signifying enlightenment.
