WESTERN PROVINCE

RUSIZI — Defilement and rape cases have increased in Rusizi district in the last two months, a recent police report reveals.

The report was released on Monday by Supt Danny Ndayambaje, the district Police Commander during a security meeting which took place at Centre pastoral in Kamembe.

According to police statistics, 11 defilement and five rape cases were registered between January 6 and February 27, which the police chief said is a big number compared to the previous years. He said that the victims were girls aged between 5-17 from three sector units of Kamembe, Gihundwe and Bugarama.

Ndayambaje disclosed that Police authorities have formed anti-gender violence clubs across the district to tackle the problems of sexual violence in the area, by working in tandem with community policing committees.

He explained that cases of domestic violence are ranked second while robbery came third among the common forms of crimes. He reaffirmed the Police’s readiness to tackle such vices.
