KIGALI - Several senior officials of the Rwanda Senate have been suspended from their duties for alleged irregularities. They include the Secretary General, Fidele Rwigamba.

Reliable sources told The New Times that the suspensions were linked to suspected overpricing of ICT equipment supplied to Senators.

The issue first cropped up during the last government Retreat that was held in Rubavu District when the president of the Senate, Vincent Biruta, was reportedly requested to explain the US$ 800 price tag that went to buy laptop bags.

"What kind of computing does a laptop bag do to warrant that spending? How can a technician seriously justify spending that amount on a laptop bag”? President Paul Kagame asked.

Senate President Biruta was unavailable to comment as his phone went unanswered by the time we went to press.

The matter has been taken very seriously to the extent that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has taken a keen interest in the case and is investigating whether no laws were broken in the purchase of the controversial bags.
