KIGALI - After what has been described as a big triumph in this year’s academic performance, Dr. Daphrose Gahakwa the Minister of Education has said the best students will be rewarded.

Without disclosing what and when the event will take place, Gahakwa said at least 53 of this year’s best science students will be recognized. She said that the students to be awarded include those who managed to score grade A in all subjects.

Efforts to know the best schools in this year’s A level performance were fruitless as the State Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Theoneste Mutsindashyaka, could not pick his cell phone.

John Rutayisire, the Executive Secretary of Rwanda National Examination Council (RNEC) could also not be reached.

At least 88.9 percent of the 38,928 candidates who sat for National Examinations last year passed the exams.

Only 19.7 percent of the students who passed national exams with distinctions will be enrolled in public institutions of higher learning, to continue their studies to fill 7,672 available places for a possible government funding.
