GICUMBI — A man in Gicumbi district on Wednesday night committed suicide after hacking his wife to death, police said. Police say Ildephonse Mpazayino, a resident of Kigogo Cell in Nyankenke Sector killed Drocella Mukangarambe reportedly over sex, before taking his own life.

According to the district Acting Police Commander, CIP Jean de Dieu Gashiramanga, the woman declined to have sex with her husband because the man had undergone through sterilisation for family planning purposes.

"On realising that the man is no longer capable of impregnating her, Mukangarambe refused to engage in sexual intercourse with her husband on the fateful night, prompting Mpazayino to cut his wife’s head using a machete and later he committed suicide by swallowing rat poison,” Gashiramanga said on Thursday.

The dead couple is survived by three children. By press time, both bodies of Mpazayino and Mukangarambe were still lying at Byumba Hospital mortuary, pending burial arrangements.
