NORTHERN PROVINCE

GICUMBI — The Mayor of Gicumbi, Bonane Nyangezi, has urged Gicumbi residents on the need for self reliance, saying the country can’t achieve full democracy when the economy is still dependent on foreign aid.

He was on Thursday addressing sector electoral executive committees who had gathered for a one day seminar, organised by the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

The seminar was aimed at sensitising participants on the need to promote good governance and democratic principles, through free and fair elections.

Nyangezi advised the participants who comprised of nine members from each sector unit to empower the youth with the necessary skills to foster unity and development because they are designated as the future leaders.

He reminded them of Rwanda’s development pillars of good governance, improved social welfare, universal  Justice  and economic development.

"Advice residents in your sectors to join health insurance, practice modern agriculture and livestock farming and to live within community settlements ‘Midugudu’ in order to attain speedy development,” he said.

The seminar was conducted at four different sites of Byumba, Rebero, Rutare, and Mulindi.

Richard Gakwerere, officer in-charge of the district electoral commission, advised participants to sensitise residents on unity in order to eradicate all forms of divisions especially genocide ideology.

"You are the ones to prepare Rwandans to be responsible and law abiding citizens,” said Gakwerere.

The participants included Sector Executive Secretaries, chairpersons of sector advisory councils, Sector election volunteers, and representatives of community policing committees. Others included women and youth representatives and representatives of the district Private Sector Federation.
