Petro de Luanda 107-94 Al Alhly Ly
Angolan giants Petro de Luanda beat Al Ahly Ly 107-94 on Saturday, May 31, in the final held at BK Arena to win the 2024 Basketball Africa League championship.
This is Petro de Luanda's first continental title since winning the 2015 FIBA Africa Champions Cup in their capital of Luanda.
The Angolan champions trailed 52-40 at the break, but managed to turn things around in the third quarter to end Al Ahly Ly's three-game winning streak in the postseason.
"This is what was missing,” said team captain Carlos Morais after he admitted the Angolan champions’ unimpressive campaign in the past three seasons.
Nicholas Faust led the new champions with 24 points while Markeith Cummings added 20 and Cleusio Castro provided a massive performance of 10 points off the bench.
Jo-Lual Acuil Jr., who was named the 2024 BAL MVP, finished with 15 points.
Petro de Luanda went 5-2 during the Kalahari Conference group phase in Pretoria, South Africa, and the playoffs in Kigali, defeating Senegal’s AS Douanes and South Africa’s Cape Town Tigers in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Rivers Hoopers defeated the Cape Town Tigers 80-57 on Friday, May 31, to finish in third place.
