Justice Minister Johnston Busingye on Saturday confirmed that a woman who recently repatriated from eastern DR Congo along with hundreds of other dependents of anti-Rwanda militia has been sent to jail for her role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

This comes shortly after reports emerged last week that Angeline Mukandutiye was among the hundreds of people recently forced to return home.

The Minister tweeted: "Angeline Mukandutiye has a valid unserved Gacaca life sentence. She is now at Mageragere Correctional Facility.”

This paper, in the past, reported that women participated in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi as planners and perpetrators, but rarely were there cases of women arming and training Interahamwe militia and joining in attacks against the Tutsi that killed more than a million people in three months.

Mukandutiye, a School Inspector in Nyarugenge Commune in 1994, was one such woman.

She was born in Giciye Commune in former Gisenyi Prefecture and was married to Jean Sahunkuye, a relative of former President Juvénal Habyarimana.

Available information indicates that in April 1994, Mukandutiye was also a leader of the Interahamwe and in de facto control of Bwahirimba secteur in lower Kiyovu.

She was directly under the command of and accountable to Col. Tharcisse Renzaho, who was the Mayor of Kigali. Renzaho was convicted and sentenced to life in prison by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in July 2009 for his role in the Genocide.

Her arrest comes after hundreds of others like her were forced to return home from DR Congo where the government army has stepped up an offensive against Rwandan terror groups in an ongoing effort to rout all foreign armed militias based in the neighbouring country.

DR Congo’s President Félix Tshisekedi has vowed to deal with the problem of insecurity in his country, especially in the east where a myriad of militia are wreaking havoc.

In the past few months, the Congolese army has steadfastly pushed the militias out of their strongholds and killed their leaders as well as scores of others.
