Kanyombya steals the spotlight at Gen Z Comedy event

If we were to assert that Kanyombya has been a foundational figure in Rwanda's comedy scene, we wouldn't be exaggerating. Born Ndjoli Kayitankole, the 62-year-old comedian took to the stage alongside younger talents on the comedy show 'Gen Z' on Thursday, May 31.

He was accompanied by his wife, adorned in traditional 'Umushanana' attire, and commenced his act with a brief and joyful dance.

Led by Fally Merci, the segment typically encourages guests to indulge in light-hearted banter and share tales of triumph with the audience. However, Kanyombya had a different agenda. When he graced the stage, it became clear that this wouldn't be an ordinary interview.

Kanyombya took center stage, captivating the audience with side-splitting jokes and lighthearted jabs at the celebrities in attendance. When prompted to name his favorite Rwandan celebrities, he playfully challenged anyone feeling like a superstar to stand up.

Kanyombya was accompanied by his wife.

Amidst the laughter, a radio presenter rose from the crowd, humorously prompting Kanyombya to question his superstar status. He then referenced his viral meme circulating on global social media platforms, endorsed by celebrities like Wiz Khalifa and Will Smith. "If you call yourself a superstar, does Wiz Khalifa know you?" he quipped.

Throughout his performance, laughter filled the air, with cell phones raised to capture every memorable moment, underscoring Kanyombya&039;s universal comedic appeal.

Among the lineup were other talented acts including Muhinde, Tizzy, Umushumba, Keppa Nyirudushya, and more, each adding to the evening's entertainment.

About Kanyombya:

Born November 23, 1962, in Goma, DR Congo, Kanyombya is the son of the late Jean Baptist Sakumi and Gaudence Mukandutiye, raised in a family of seven. He attended Ecole Primaire St. Andre in Goma before pursuing Psychology at Tuugane Institute.

Joining the Rwanda Patriotic Army in 1992, he later embarked on his comedic journey in 2002, appearing on numerous TV and web shows locally and regionally. His comedic prowess has garnered global recognition, with some of his videos achieving viral status on platforms like TikTok and Instagram reels.
