KAMONYI - Police in Kamonyi district has issued a stern warning to residents to desist from use of illicit drugs in order to reduce related crimes.

Chief inspector of Police (CIP), Innocent Semigabo made this call on February 19, after Police in Musambira sector set ablaze narcotics worth Rwf.600.000.

The drugs included 420 litres of local brew, commonly known as, Kanyanga and 15 kilograms of Marijuana collected from various sectors and scenes of crime during Police operations last year.

Semigabo said that drug abuse is listed as the second most prevalent. He blamed drug abuse as the cause of an increment in crime levels especially those related to homicide and violence.

"Over 50 cases of drug abusers and users of illegal liquor have been prosecuted, fined and detained in police custody during the last calendar year”, Semigabo said.

It has been reported that most of the drugs are sneaked into the country through neighbouring countries namely the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
