Rwandan defeats doubles partner to win UG Open title

JEAN Claude Gasigwa claimed his second title in just over seven days with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Francis Rogoi of Kenya at the Tusker-Malt sponsored Uganda Open yesterday.

The Rwandan ace, seeded third in the four-day tournament breezed past the fourth-seed in straight sets to add the Uganda Open crown to last week’s East Africa Prize money circuit Kigali leg title were he beat Zimbabwe’s Martin Dzuwa in the final.

Gasigwa, who ejected top seed Duncan Mugabe at the semi-final stage matched into the final with a superior head to head record (2-1) and did not disappoint as he lived up to the billing with a series of some powerful serves and slick play.

For his heroics, the 26-year-old who bagged Shs 1m (Frw 0.3m).

Meanwhile, Rwanda’s Jennifer Ingabire lost 6-0, 6-4 to Kenya’s Caroline Odour in the ladies’ final. 

Odour pocketed Shs 0.5m (approx. Frw160, 000) while Ingabire walked away with Shs 0.4m (approx. Frw130, 000).
