KIGALI - The UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator, Derviş Kemal, begins his three-day visit to Rwanda today. Kemal will hold discussions with various partners of the ‘One UN – Delivering as One’ initiative.

He will meet with government officials, MPs, representatives of civil society, organisations and the private sector, according to statement released yesterday.

He is also expected to meet the donor community and the UN country team to discuss the progress of the reforms at country level, and their existing cooperation with the UNDP.  He is accompanied by the UNDP Africa Bureau Regional Director, Fossoun Houngbo Gilbert.

They will visit a number of UN-supported projects in the Western and Eastern provinces as well as in Kigali City.

In the Western Province, the delegation will visit an environment management programme which showcases decentralisation along the shores of Lake Kivu.

In the Eastern Province, they will visit the Millennium Village project in Mayange to see how coordinated efforts towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) can positively change the lives of the people.

In Kigali, Kemal is scheduled to attend a Gacaca court session and visit the e-Parliament project. Today he is set to address parliamentarians. He will also meet with the Forum for Women Parliamentarians (FFRP).

The UN is helping Rwanda speed up progress towards achieving the MDGs and the Vision 2020.

In January, Rwanda was selected as one of eight pilot countries for ‘One UN’ along with Albania, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Pakistan, Tanzania, Uruguay and Vietnam.
