RAYON Sports were stunned 2-1 by lowly Sunrise on Saturday to suffer first defeat in the new Rwanda Premier League season as AS Kigali beat Marines 1-0 to end their wait for first win.

Goals from Suleiman Manjanjaro and Pius Mwangu were enough to hand Sunrise a deserved home victory at Nyagatare Stadium.

Forward Manjanjaro opened the scoring after 17 minutes before Mwanga netted the winner with two minutes to clock. Former AS Muhanga striker Yannick Bizimana scored the consolation goal for the visitors who went into the game looking to go top of the table.

The Blues were reduced to ten men ‘in the late stages of the game’ after Ghana-born striker Michael Sarpong was shown a red card for insulting the referee.

After five-match rounds, reigning champions Rayon have collected 10 points, one adrift of Police who could lose the top spot if APR win their fixture on Sunday.

In the meantime, Ibrahim Nshimiyimana was the lone scorer as his 12th-minute strike earned all the points to AS Kigali, marking their first win to end a frustrating four-match winless run.

APR take on AS Muhanga at Kigali Stadium Sunday afternoon, starting at 3pm, with their sights set on the top position.

The army side have 10 points from four matches, having only stumbled once ‘in a goalless draw’ against AS Kigali in the league’s opener on October 4.
