Brexit is not meant to be and here’s why

The views expressed here are those of a non-British Citizen whose opinion doesn’t really matter but I’ll express them anyway!

Britain was meant to have left the European Union by March 2019 and yet here we are several months later and they’re starting to look a lot like those guests who say they’re only staying the night and years later, they’re still lounging on your couch and cleaning out your fridge! So how did we get here?

That Referendum in 2016 that no one thought would deliver a "Leave” Vote. I remember it like yesterday. Glued to my TV watching Chief Brexiteer Nigel Farage delve into a concession speech of sorts only for the final tally to shock us all.

Britons had voted 52 to 48 percent to leave the European Union and no one wanted to believe it, well except those who wanted to leave. Fast forward to today and just like pre-Referendum, there’re two camps battling to impose their will. You’re either a Remainer or Brexiteer.

True advocates of Democracy want the result of that Referendum to be implemented and yet at the same time, this is as big a decision as they come and there are those who believe that Britain just can’t leave the EU.

That is why we’re witnessing all this drama and chaos. Some want a second Referendum or General Election. Others just want it all to be over already. We saw the resignation of not one but two Prime Ministers in David Cameron and Theresa May along with several Members of Parliament who’ve also resigned or been sacked depending on their stance.

The negotiations, pleas, threats, showdowns, backstabbing, heckling in Parliament, amendments and extension requests, and I finally get why many equate this Brexit debacle to divorce.

Amidst all the acrimony are people who still love each other and are reluctant to split but the process is far too gone and is now before a court of law. Depending on how good or rigid the lawyers are, a settlement must be reached with each side vying to squeeze as much as they can from the other party.

Who gets to keep what and why? Custody battles ensue over the children, shared property, pets, in-laws and mutual friends because some people fight over those too, reminding one another whose friends they were before the couple met!

It brings out all the viciousness the parties never imagined or intended. Out of pride, hurt or indignation, some couples do go through with the divorce just to make a point. Others decide that there’s too much to lose and so call it off.

This Brexit fallout is playing out exactly like that and no one really knows how long it will last if there will be a Brexit at all, what life will be like after Brexit or if there will be a future attempt to rejoin the EU.

If it were up to me, I’d cancel Brexit even though I have absolutely no clue as to how I’d deal with those who voted to leave!
