Milk prices expected to drop

NYAGATARE—Milk consumers are soon to enjoy much more milk as prices are projected to drop in Nyagatare and other milk producing areas in the country, following heavy rains received in Umutara grazing area, an Umutara Dairy Marketing Cooperative (UDAMACO) official disclosed.

According to UDAMACO, milk production has increased to such a great extent that thousands of liters of milk do not reaching consumers and end up wasted.

"A local livestock farmer has been selling milk at 160Frw per liter. We are expecting the prices to drop since the grazing areas received heavy rains, and the whole area has turned green. This will boost milk production and push milk prices down,” said Augustine Katabarwa, the chairman of UDAMACO.

Katabarwa said prices may drop on Monday of next week. UDAMACO proposes to drop prices from 160Frw to 130Frw per liter for dairy farmers.  For consumers in Kigali prices are expected to drop from 200Frw to 180Frw.

He added that milk prices always drops according seasons. "It’s normal – when it rains heavily prices always have to drop.”
