Police got off to a winning start in the 2019/2020 Rwanda Premier League season on Sunday as they edged Sunrise 3-2 at Kigali Stadium.

Despite a cagey start, Police gained momentum with time and started to control the possession. Osée Iyabivuze, Dominique Ndayishimiye, and new signing Dominique Savio Nshuti were on the target to give the law enforcers a perfect opening to their campaign.

Of the usual top six teams, only Francis Haringingo’s side were able to collect all the three points this weekend as champions Rayon Sports, Mukura, APR and AS Kigali all recorded draws while SC Kiyovu lost, 2-1, to Etincelles.

Iyabivuze opened the scoring in the 29th minute, and his strike proved to be the only difference at half-time. However, Sunrise equalised at the hour-mark through Pius Wangi. And, after that, it was all Police.

The hosts since dominated the play noticeably and their efforts would be rewarded in the 74th minute as forward Ndayishimiye scored to reclaim his side’s lead before former Rayon Sports and APR winger Nshuti made it 3-1 in the 83rd minute.

In the late stages of the match, however, Police players showed signs of fatigue and diminished concentration, which their opponents capitalised on to find a second goal through Samson Babua with three minutes to clock.

In another match, AS Muhanga were held 1-1 by Musanze at Muhanga Stadium. Jean Claude Harerimana put the hosts ahead in the 44th minute before Obed Harerimana equalised for the visitors in the 77th minute.
