KARONGI – The District has commissioned an investigation into alleged mismanagement of funds meant for the health insurance scheme commonly known as ‘Mituelle de sante.’

This was revealed by the district Mayor Bernard Kayumba, on Wednesday at a security meeting held at the district headquarters in the Rubengera Sector.

The disclosure was in response to reports that unspecified sums of money meant for the health insurance scheme that was collected mostly by cell leaders, had been  embezzled.

Kayumba, warned of punitive measures against all those who will be implicated.

"This money is collected to help residents get medical treatment. Investigations are being carried out by security organs and those implicated will be punished accordingly,” he said, pointing out that it was shocking to find local leaders diverting funds meant to help the poor.

According to reports, quite a number of  Bwishuyura and Rubengera Sectors  leaders have been implicated in the financial scam.

The meeting also discussed the preparations to mark the upcoming 15th genocide commemoration week slated for the outset of April.

The mayor called for teamwork to assist with effects geared towards cleaning different Genocide Sites where remains of genocide victims recovered will be given decent burial.

On security, army and police representatives at the meeting said the current security situation in the district was stable, which they attributed to efforts of residents working under community policing committees.
