Rwanda 7-0 Seychelles (Agg. 10-0)

Rwanda has secured a slot in the group stage of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers after thrashing the Seychelles 7-0 at Kigali Stadium on Tuesday.

It was the national team’s biggest victory in a single match since humiliating Eritrea 9-0 in December 2007.

Amavubi matched into the group stage 10-0 on aggregate following last week’s 3-0 win in the two sides’ first-leg played at Linite Stadium in Seychelles.

In Tuesday night’s victory, skipper Jacques Tuyisenge and striker Meddie Kagere scored twice apiece, while Djihad Bizimana, Yannick Mukunzi and Muhadjiri Hakizimana were on target with a goal each.

During the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Rwanda failed to make it past the preliminary round.

What’s next?

In the meantime, head coach Vincent Mashami will have no time to relax, and neither will most of his players, and they turn focus on the upcoming double-header against Ethiopia in the African Nations Championships (CHAN) qualifiers.

Rwanda will first travel to Addis Ababa for the first-leg clash, due September 22, before hosting the decisive encounter on October 19.

In a post-match interview, Mashami revealed that he will release the squad to face Ethiopia on Wednesday, just one week before taking on DR Congo in a friendly match in Kinshasa.
