The return leg of the bilateral series between Rwanda and Nigeria women cricket teams gets underway Wednesday at Gahanga Cricket Oval.  

The two national teams will face off in five matches, with the first games set for today. Two more games will be played Friday before locking horns in the final game on Saturday.

Joshua Mwanja, Rwanda’s women cricket head coach, said that his players are fit for the friendly series and will be looking to return the favour after losing the first-leg in Nigeria earlier this year.

"We are focused, and ready for the series. We have learned a lot from our recent engagements, especially in batting. We have been practicing tactical rotations in training, and I believe they will come in handy during these matches.”

He added, "Our bowling department has no issues.”

According to Emmanuel Byiringiro, general manager of the Rwanda Cricket Association, the friendly matches with Nigeria are mutually beneficial as rising cricketing nations, not only in Africa, but also in the global ranks.

"The partnership with Nigerian Cricket Federation is good for both national teams. Through the friendly matches, we share experience and lessons as aspiring cricketing countries.”

In the ICC (International Cricket Council) women’s T20 rankings, Rwanda is in 30th position in the world, while Nigeria are 40th.

Both Rwanda and Leonard Oghenekevwe’s Nigerian side will use the five-match series as part of their preparations for qualifiers of the 2021 Women’s Cricket World Cup.
