Mathieu Miller, one of Rwanda’s key players for the upcoming Africa-Zone V qualifiers is back on court after injuring his left elbow during one of the team’s training sessions last Wednesday.

The guard, who features in England’s basketball league, resumed light training on Monday and Jean Claude Rutabayiro, one of Kavedzija Vaceslave’s assistants said that the player who turns 27 this year was getting better by the day.

"He did some free throw shooting on Monday and did not look like he was struggling, so the signs look good,” he said.

"He should get back to full fitness in the next couple of days,” Rutabayiro, a former APR player added.  

The qualifiers will be staged at Amahoro’s newly refurbished indoor stadium from February 23-March 1. Some of the countries expected to feature include; Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Burundi, Somalia and hosts Rwanda.

Tanzania finally withdraws from qualifiers
Tanzania has finally pulled out of the African Zone-5 qualifiers due to cash problems.

Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) Secretary General, Lawrence Cheyo said that the federation had failed to raise the needed Sh45m (Frw 23 millions) to cater for the teams (men and women) preparations and expenses while in Kigali.

In fact, it is reported that the players have rejoined their respective clubs to prepare for the Dar es Salaam Regional Basketball (RBA) league quarter-finals.

Omony joins Ugandan team

Uganda’s Seychelles-based basketball ace Steven Omony has linked up with his national team ahead of the Zone 5 Africa Championship qualifiers.

Omony, one of Uganda’s greatest basketball players is expected to add grit to the team’s front-court, which also boasts of another great in team captain Norman Blick who was linked to join Espoir sometime last year.
