Japanese experts from the Tsukuba International Academy for Sport (TIAS) program have urged local coaches and sports leaders in various disciplines to integrate research and sports science in their work if they are to drive sports development in Rwanda.

Professor Rakwal Randeep, an instructor from TIAS, made the remarks Tuesday while closing a 3-day training workshop on sports development at Olympic Hotel in Kigali.

The workshop had a total of 25 participants – coaches and sports leaders from different federations.

"Research and sports science has a significant impact on sports development because it involves the application of scientific principles and techniques,” said Randeep.

He further argued that the two (research and sports science) form a important part of the knowledge base required for coaches to make effective decisions in solve problems, and it still lacks not only in Rwanda but in most countries across Africa.

"Physical education needs to be integrated into the schools’ curriculum, both at the primary and secondary level.”

The main objective of the workshop was to create sports development agents through TIAS alumni in Rwanda while strengthening relations between the two countries.  

During the workshop, participants were trained on a range of topics such as the Japanese coaching system and philosophy both for Olympics and Paralympics disciplines, research methods in sports science, as well as anti-doping education among others

On behalf of the participants, Jean Marie Nsengiyumva, a sitting volleyball coach with the National Paralympics Committee said that "The workshop was enriching” before urging fellow trainees to implement what they learned in their everyday work.
