NORTHERN PROVINCE

About 1,040 houses have been constructed for genocide survivors within Musanze district, according to a recent report released last Monday.

The report was compiled by a five-man committee comprising of officials from police, army, prosecution and the Ministry of Local Government.

It was set up to investigate alleged misuse of building materials meant to construct houses for vulnerable groups in the districts.

The committee also established that 230 houses were built in Burera, while over 600 were constructed in the Gakenke district.

Committee members were satisfied that most of the building materials allocated to the Musanze district was put to good use, the report notes.

The materials received last year included iron sheets, nails and cement and each district was given the materials depending on the number of the vulnerable people especially genocide survivors, the historically marginalised and other desperate residents.

Some of the peculiar cases discovered by the committee included the beneficiaries who reportedly sold out a portion of their materials to buy other complimenting materials for construction.

In Butaro, 28 iron sheets were not accounted for, while in another Sector within Gakenke the beneficiaries used some of the materials to build a church.
