I have been walking to work from Nyarutarama to Kacyiru every morning. The fresh morning air is made better by meeting all the happy children running and walking to school every morning.

This walk is however, regularly interrupted by a few inconsiderate motorists on cars and motorcycles, who have no regard for the fact that, the path they are driving on, has many children.

They drive quite fast putting the children’s lives at risk. I have noticed a disturbing habit amongst motorists in Rwanda- instead of being careful while driving; they choose to keep hooting all the time, even when not necessary.

The same applies here; instead of slowing down (or not driving in this area all together), they just speed on at approximately 40kph and hoot all the way.

When they approach a junction, instead of slowing down, they just hoot and continue This is a daily occurrence and you can imagine the amount of dust that the children have to inhale, especially during the dry season.

This exposes the children to several respiratory and eye complications from a very early age. The most unfortunate thing is that those who drive by in such an inconsiderate manner are actually dropping their children off to school and they should know better.

I am writing to request for speed limit possibly of 10kph, on this dusty road that extends from MINAGRI in Kacyiru to the golf course in Nyarutarama.

It would be wise to get a traffic police officer to come, enforce some reasonable driving, and protect our children as they get to school and back.
