The national U-16 basketball team captain, Dick Sano Rutatika, on Sunday scored 16 points to help Rwanda overcome Cote d'Ivoire 62-60.

This was during the opening match of the 2019 FIBA Africa Men’s U-16 Basketball Championship that was held at the Gymnasium Vava Duarte in Cape Verde.

The hard-won victory for Yves Murenzi’s team started with a 14-10 win in the first quarter but Cote d'Ivoire bounced back in the second quarter with a 14-11 win to go into half-time with a 25-24 lead.

Cote d'Ivoire maintained their dominance, winning the third quarter 17-15, but Rwanda bounced back in the final quarter, winning 22-19, which put their final tally at 62 against Cote d’Ivoire’s 60 points.

In their second match to be played on Monday, the junior hoops will be up against Guinea. The game starts at 6:45pm local time.

Murenzi’s youthful side is pitted against giants Mali, Tunisia, Ivory Coast and Guinea in group A, while Group B comprises of hosts Cape Verde, Egypt, Nigeria, Angola and Algeria.
