The rugby, swimming and kung-fu federations are to hold memorial tournaments Saturday and Sunday as the weekend marks the end of Genocide Memorial Tournaments (GMT) this year.

Rugby

Thousand Hills are keen on retaining the 7’s rugby memorial tournament’s title, and head coach Jimmy Mugabo insists his young guns are ‘ready for the challenge’.

The Hills claimed last year’s title after tormenting Kigali Sharks 33-0 in the final.

According to rugby federation, six teams will be vying for the top honours of the competition’s 6th edition at Croix Rouge grounds in Kacyiru.

The six teams are; Thousand Hills, Kigali Sharks, Lion de Fer, Resilience, Okapi Goma of DR Congo and Uganda’s RAMS RFC.

Kung-fu

Six countries namely; Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia and the hosts Rwanda, have confirmed their representation at this year’s Kung-fu memorial tournament.

The competition, under different age and gender categories, start 10am at Amahoro Stadium on Saturday.

Speaking to Saturday Sport on Friday, the local kung-fu federation’s president, Marc Uwiragiye, was confident that the competition will be more entertaining than any of its previous editions.

Rwanda dominated the medal table last year, followed by Zambia.

Over ninety set for swimming GMT

A total of ninety-three swimmers from different local clubs have registered to take part in the 2019 swimming memorial tournament.

The event will be held Sunday at Cercle Sportif de Kigali.

Some of the clubs that had confirmed their participation – by press time Friday – include Rwamagana Canoe, Thousand Kilos Women Canoe, Green Hills, Riviera High School, Saint Aloys, Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle and Cercle Sportif club.

Sunday’s competition marks the eighth edition of the annual showpiece since its inauguration in 2011.
