Singer Dr Thomas Muyombo, best known by his stage name Tom Close, has opened up on how he and his wife adopted an abandoned three week-old baby boy from Nyagatare District.
Muyombo currently serves as director of the Regional Centre for Blood Transfusion (RCBT) Kigali.
News of the adoption first came to light Thursday through social media but the singer told The New Times he adopted the child almost a month ago.
Muyombo, who already had two children with his wife Tricia of five years, said the couple had always wanted to adopt a child but did not know it would come so soon.
"We read an article by a local news outlet about a child who had been dumped and then rescued from a toilet and I wanted to adopt him. I consulted my wife, and she agreed to it, but we were told that he was not available because the police had found the mother,” he said.
Later, the director of the hospital where the child had been taken for treatment told the artiste that such cases of child abandonment were common in the area.
"We told him that if another abandoned child shows up, we were ready to welcome them into our family,” he said.
A week and a half later, indeed another abandoned child was brought to the hospital, and the director subsequently telephoned the Muyombos as promised.
"That's how we ended up going there to pick him,” he said.
