MUSANZE — Authorities in the Musanze district have intensified a campaign to promote hygiene and sanitation in Ruhengeri town.

During the latest round of inspection by a team of district security officials comprising  police and army officials, the second in less than two months, a number of businesses operating in filthy conditions were closed down and owners fined Rwf.50,000.

The closure was not abrupt as residents had been warned to clean up, while being urged to refurbish old fashioned structures and clear trenches for running sewage.

The area Sector Executive Secretary Amiel Ndahiro, said that the inspection exercise will be conducted regularly as part of the measures instituted by the district committee to ensure hygiene.

Those who fail to meet the expected minimum standards shall not be allowed to operate, he said. Following the clampdown, traders who were affected complained that the fines imposed were too high.

They blamed the cleaners who had been hired to ensure that hygiene was adhered to, for failing to do their work. Houses it was noted  lacked  public dustbins while others had  substandard unclean toilets. Water trenches were also blocked.
