KIGALI - The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for East African Community (EAC) affairs, Charles Gasana, has lost his job. Prime Minister, Bernard Makuza fired him late last week. 

The Minister for EAC affairs, Monique Mukaruliza confirmed the news saying that she received a copy of the letter the Premier wrote to Gasana relieving him of his duties.

"The letter clearly indicated that he had been sacked, however the reasons were not disclosed,” Mukaruliza told The New Times.

Efforts to unearth reasons for his dismissal were still futile by press time.

Gasana’s sacking follows a string of other Permanent Secretaries who have lost their jobs on corruption related charges.

They include the former PS in the Ministry of Education, Justin Nsengiyumva and the now incarcerated former Permanent Secretary of the Infrastructure Ministry, Vincent Gatwabuyenge.

Nsengiyumva was arrested and detained for allegedly demanding a bribe from local businessman Moses Byaruhanga who had won a tender worth over Rwf 70 million to supply computers to the ministry.

The police were tipped off and caught Nsengiyumva red-handed although he managed to escape from custody.

Vincent Gatwabuyenge’s case is still in court on charges related to corruption and embezzlement of about Rwf 1,7b for the construction of the Kigali-Bugesera road.
