Six girls’ teams will compete in the one-day tournament ‘Get into Rugby’, a grassroots rugby programme organized at Buhoro grounds, in Ruhango district, on Sunday.
The local rugby governing body has confirmed.
The ‘Get Into Rugby’ programme is a grassroots rugby program that aims at encouraging players of all ages to try, play and stay in rugby while promoting the values of the game and encouraging children to practice Rugby in a safe and progressive environment.
The six teams are; GS Shyogwe, GS Ruhango, GS Munini, GS Muhororo, Lycee de Kigali and Lion de Fer
The women representative in Rwanda Rugby Federation, Ihirwe Delphine, said, "The aim of this tournament is to give the opportunity to increase awareness and the profile of women in rugby in the country.”
Meanwhile, Tharcisse Kamanda, the president of the federation and the project manager for ‘Get Into Rugby’ urges many Rwandans, especially the women and girls, to ‘come to rugby’.
"Rugby isn’t a game for boys only, and we call upon schools in the country to make the sport part of their activities.”
