Poor scores were the order of the day in the just ended four-day Captain’s Prize Tourney at Gymkhana Golf Club course in Dar es Salaam.

Rwanda’s pro-golfers Jean Baptist Hakizimana and Emmanuel Ruterana were part of 22 golfers in contention for the lucrative $6,000 (approx. Frw 4m) cash prize.

However, the scorching sun at the coastal town was a test they failed as they returned inconsistent scores on the Par-71 course.

Hakizimana sponsored by MTN Rwanda returned 306 to jointly finish ninth with Tanzania’s Salim Dilunga while Ruterana tied with Kenya’s Ernest Mutema in 11th spot after returning 308. Despite the harsh conditions, Kenyan golfers held their nerves to dictate proceedings.

Kenyan ace Richard Ainley who finished second in the 2007 Rwanda Open pocketed $1,100 (approx. Frw 0.7m) after topping the leader board with a respectable 290. He beat his compatriot Nicholas Rokoine by one stroke.

Ali Kimani and Jacob Okello finished third and fourth after returning 294 with four and five strokes off the pace.

Deo Akope was Uganda’s top golfer after returning 298 and walked away with $450.

15 golfers made the cut after day two.
