The Rwandan troops operating in Sudan’s Darfur region as part of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation (UNAMID) continue to perform their duties as per their mandate, Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Spokesperson Lt. Col. Innocent Munyengango told Saturday Times on Friday.

The Defence and Military Spokesperson was responding to inquiries from this paper in light of recent developments in Sudan. In the capital, Khartoum, thousands of protesters continue to fill the streets calling for an end to the country’s military council.

Earlier this month, the military council announced they had deposed Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir,after months of protests by civilians.

Munyengango said: "RDF has got two infantry battalions operating in Darfur region as part of United Mission -African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) plus attached military staff officers with a total of 1,135 personnel.

"The ongoing developments have not had any effect to the mission of UNAMID and our troops continue to perform their duties as per assigned mandate.”

President Paul Kagame on Tuesday this week attended a one-day AU Troika Summit on Libya and Sudan, convened by the current African Union Chairperson and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, in Cairo.

Other Heads of State in attendance included Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, Idriss Déby of Chad, and Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti.

The AU Troika comprises Rwanda as former AU Chair, Egypt as the current Chair, and South Africa as the next Chair.
