We recognise and celebrate the top 10 poets who are shaping cultural narratives and inspiring social change. Through their performances, popularity, and profound insights, these poets are driving the development of poetry in Rwanda, leaving an indelible mark on the literary landscape.
Junior Rumaga
Junior Rumaga is a multifaceted artist, renowned for his prowess as a poet, author, playwright, social activist, novelist, and songwriter. As the founder of Sigarwanda House of Poet, he has been instrumental in nurturing Rwanda's poetry community.
Rumaga's accolades include the Isibo Award for Best Poet of the Year 2022–2023 and a nomination for Best African Poet by the Zikomo Africa Awards in 2022–2023. His poetry, characterized by evocative depictions of Rwandan family life, reflects the complexity and richness of African existence, Umugore s’umuntu, Amazina ya Nyanja, and Mawe are some of his notable works.

Malaika Uwamahoro
Malaika Uwamahoro is a versatile artist whose talent transcends boundaries. As a recipient of a Rwandan Presidential Scholarship, she attended Fordham University and has since performed her poetry on prestigious stages worldwide. Uwamahoro's notable appearances include CHOGM in Rwanda, Forbes Women Africa in Durban, South Africa, and the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Her performances, often touching on themes of identity, resilience, and social justice, have earned her recognition, including the Best Actress Award at the Vues D’Afrique Festival International de Cinéma in Montréal.
Olivier Tuyisenge
Olivier Tuyisenge, a creative visionary, has been a driving force in Rwanda's poetry scene since 2014. In addition to his poetic endeavors, Tuyisenge actively participates in traditional Rwandan wedding ceremonies, enriching cultural experiences with his performances.
Through initiatives like Ndi Igisigo, he promotes poetry as a tool for personal and collective expression. Tuyisenge's poetry, characterized by its emotive storytelling and cultural resonance, has garnered him numerous accolades, including the Springtime of Poet Award in 2016.
Confiance Kibasumba
Confiance, a young and vibrant poet, burst onto the scene in 2020 with a YouTube channel that quickly gained popularity. With a growing collection of individual and collaborative works, Confiance has established herself as a rising star in Rwandan poetry. Her pieces, such as "Impanuro" and "Amasisi," resonate deeply with audiences, reflecting her keen insight into human emotions and experiences. In 2024, she was honored with the Best Female Poetry Award by the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy, cementing her status as a promising talent in the poetry scene.
Eric Ngangare
Eric Ngangare, known by his stage name 1Key, has been a prominent figure in Rwanda's artistic landscape since 2015. Renowned for his captivating performances and thought-provoking works, Ngangare has played a pivotal role in the success of Spoken Word Rwanda.
His ability to deliver poetry in multiple languages, coupled with his commitment to addressing societal issues, has earned him widespread acclaim. Ngangare's contributions to the poetry community continue to inspire and uplift audiences across Rwanda.

Carine Maniraguha
Carine, celebrated for her compelling slam poetry, has left an indelible mark on Rwanda's poetry scene. Her performances, including appearances at the Kigali Trainers Festival, showcase her talent and passion for the art form.
Notably, Carine took the initiative to organise the Ibanga Poetic Night, demonstrating her dedication to fostering a vibrant poetry community. Her achievements, including being named Best Female Poet in Rwanda in 2020 and 2022, reflect her significant impact on the local and international poetry circuit.
Sylvester Nsengimana
Sylvester Nsengimana, a poet since 2019, has garnered recognition for his profound and poignant works. His poems, such as "Amajwi Yirwanda" and "Imitoma," reflect his keen observation of Rwandan society and its complexities. Nsengimana's participation in events like the Ubumuntu Art Festival underscores his commitment to using poetry as a tool for social reflection and dialogue. In 2024, he received a nomination for Best Male Poet in Rwanda, solidifying his position as a prominent voice in Rwandan poetry.
Natacha Karangwa
Natacha Karangwa, a proud Rwandan poet, began her journey in 2014 with a focus on promoting spoken word in Rwanda. Her performances at various events, including the Kwibuka genocide commemoration ceremonies, highlight her dedication to addressing pressing issues of humanity and gospel.
