The first weekend of May is upon us, and Kigali's event calendar is bustling. In addition to your usual after-work plans this Friday, The New Times presents a curated list of seven low-key events that deserve your attention. Don&039;t miss out—take your pick!

Rugarama Reverse and Mount Jali Scenic Trails

Are you a nature enthusiast who enjoys hiking? This Saturday and Sunday, May 5, join in for an adventurous 14km hike up Mount Jali, Gashyusha on Saturday, followed by a 10km moderate hike up Mount Kigali on Sunday. Hiking will take place from 7:30 am to 12:00 pm.

Meet fellow hikers at Rubis Karuruma station on Saturday and SP Nyabugogo station on Sunday. The participation fee is Rwf5,000, catering to avid "tourism lovers" according to the organizers.

Africa International Club Rwanda Food Fair

Experience the AIC Food Fair 2024 this Saturday, May 4, at Kigali Serena from 12 pm to 4 pm.

Enjoy a day filled with cuisine from Kigali’s top hotels and restaurants, exciting raffle prizes, and entertainment for all, all while supporting the wider community.

AIC Rwanda is a social club that brings people together by organizing social events for its members and guests, along with two major fundraisers each year. The proceeds from these events go towards funding grassroots projects in the Rwandan community.

Entry is priced at Rwf10,000, which is fully consumable.

Painting Umugongo Workshop

Art enthusiasts eager to explore Rwandan-inspired artwork are invited to the Agaseke Center (near Canal Olympia Rebero) this Saturday, May 4, from 2 pm to 6 pm for a special painting session featuring imigongo art using cow dung.

This event welcomes couples, friends, and families. The cost ranges from Rwf35,000 for two people up to Rwf150,000 for eight people.

Attendees will savor refreshments, music, and panoramic views of the surrounding hills. You'll also depart with your own distinctive painting, experiencing firsthand the craftsmanship behind Umugongo wall decoration.

Joyfest

Looking to support a meaningful cause this Saturday, May 4, from 11am to 6pm? Joyfest is your destination.

This festival raises awareness for Down syndrome, with all proceeds benefiting the Rwanda Down Syndrome Organization. Entry is Rwf8,000 and includes a day of fun for children with activities like face painting, yard games, raffles, and other festival games. Join in at Turambe Shoppe (#18KG 599st).

Come and Hoop

Calling all basketball enthusiasts! This Sunday, May 5, head over to Kigali Heights roundabout for an exciting day of street basketball.

Join fellow fans of the game for a fun-filled day of playing ball and a chance to win prizes and merchandise from Betpawa, the official basketball partner of the Rwanda Basketball Federation.

Rwanda Basketball League

It’s the return of Rwanda Basketball League action this Friday, May 3, at Lycée de Kigali Gymnasium. The games kick off with REG vs. Inspired Generation at 6pm, followed by Tigers vs Orion at 8:30pm.

Admission fees range from Rwf3,000 to Rwf5,000 for courtside seating.

Brunch Buffet at Atelier du Vin
