JEAN Baptiste Hakizimana shot three-over-par to finish third on day one of the lucrative $6,000 Gymkhana Golf Club Captain’s Prize Tournament in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Even amidst the scorching sun, the MTN Rwanda sponsored golfer persisted to return 75, two shots off the pace set by Kenya’s Ali Kimani. Kimani returned 73 and was followed by Nicholas Rokoine at two-over-par 74.

Deo Akope was Uganda’s top golfer of the day after finishing in joint fourth spot with Dennis Onyango and Tanzania’s Salim Dilunga after carding 76.

Uganda’s Godfrey Mande, Kenyan ace Richard Ainley and Tanzania’s Salim Mwanyeneza finished in joint seventh spot five strokes off the pace.

Emmanuel Ruterana had a difficult day one and had to up his game yesterday to make the cut. The top twelve golfers after day two will be in the fray for the final two rounds and consequently the cash prize.

The winner of the four-day event will walk away with $1,100 (approx. Frw 0.6m).
