The water crisis that had hit Gisenyi Town in Rubavu District has been rectified according to Electrogaz, the public utility for the production, transmission and distribution of Electricity and Water.

The water crisis which peaked towards the end of last week hit much of the town forcing hundreds of residents to resort to using untreated water from Lake Kivu.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, Felix Gatanazi the Electrogaz Marketing Manager said that the crisis had been caused by the damage caused on infrastructure pipes by Strabag, a road construction company.

"The problem has been rectified and there is no more water crisis in Gisenyi town because the pipes have been fixed and the whole town now has running water… there should not be any cause for alarm,” said Gatanazi.

The water and power crisis in Gisenyi had caused panic and  fear among area residents as they feared that using untreated water from Lake Kivu could cause an outbreak of Cholera.
