Bugesera sitting volleyball club (women) and Gisagara (men) emerged the winners of the inaugural Heroes Day tournament, which concluded on Sunday evening at NPC Gymnasium in Remera.

Gisagara beat Gasabo in the final 3-2, with the former dominating the game from start to finish, winning the first set 30-28 and the second 25-23. Gasabo improved and won the third set 25-17 and fourth 27-25, but Gisagara made a comeback to win the tie 15-8.

Cottraru beat Musanze 3-0 in the third place while in women category Bugesera defeated Gicumbi Stars 3-1 in the final game to claim the women’s title, while Gasabo finished third after beating Musanze 3-0.

The Mayor of Bugesera District, Richard Mutabazi, said they were happy for their team performances.

"We are thrilled to win the title, it means a lot to us, it shows that our disabled women are cared for in our district and their game is on good level,” said Mutabazi, a former basketball federation general-secretary.

"We tried to recruit new good players. This year we are also planning to buy a mobile court, which can be used in various sectors to improve on our talent detection,” Mutabazi added.

Besides winning their respective trophies, Gisagara and Bugesera received Rwf130 000 in cash prize while second-placed Gasabo and Gicumbi received Rwf80 000.

Musanze men and women’s teams received Rwf50 000 each for finishing third.
