The Minister for Local Government Anastase Shyaka has lauded residents of Kavumu village in Nyarugunga sector of Kigali City’s Kicukiro District for the exemplary work they have undertaken to build an asphalt road in their community.

Shyaka, along with other senior government officials, joined the residents for the monthly community work (Umuganda ) on Saturday, which they used for activities to build an asphalt road in their neighbourhood.

The residents have already contributed Rwf145million as part of efforts to build the 1.7-km road.

They were being praised for being a good example of citizens who have understood the need for community self-reliance and cooperation among neighbours.

Delivering President Paul Kagame’s message to the residents, Minister Shyaka said that their efforts have been appreciated by the Head of State and thanked them for understanding that they have to play a role in building a city in which they live and work.

"We have to build the good city we want without relying on anyone else but ourselves,” Shyaka told the residents.

He encouraged them to keep their neighbourhood safe and clean, urging everyone to look out for each others’ safety and ensure that they respect the city’s building regulations whenever they try to set up a dwelling for themselves.

He also warned them against drug abuse and burglary that often become terrible sources of insecurity for many neighbourhoods in the city.

"We need to work together to ensure that we have safe and healthy families. Our children need to grow up in a safe environment,” the minister said.

The Mayor of Kicukiro District, Jeanne Nyirahabimana, promised the residents that the city’s administration will support them in their efforts to build an asphalt road, emphasising that their efforts remain exemplary.

"When people start such an initiative, we as the district have to support them. We will identify where you need help and support you,” she said.

Umuganda is held in communities across the country every last Saturday of every month.
